Laser Hair Removal
Unwanted facial and body hair is a problem that affects both men and women of all ages. There are a variety of treatments to decrease unwanted hair such as electrolysis, shaving and waxing. However, these treatments are painful, temporary and have variable results.
The development of laser light sources for the permanent reduction of hair has revolutionized the hair removal process. Common areas of the body for laser hair removal include the face, in particular the upper lip, chin, side burns, chest and back, legs, bikini line, and even the ears. Both men and women enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal. Dermatologists use laser light sources to remove areas of unwanted hair with minimal discomfort to the patient and zero down time.
At Derick Dermatology, we use the GentleMAX laser – a laser with two wavelengths, ideally suited for both light and dark skin types. The shorter wavelength, the Alexandrite, has a 755nm wavelength that targets hair follicles and is typically used on patients with lighter skin. The Nd:YAG laser has a longer 1064nm wavelength and has the ability to treat darker skin types.
It is important to choose an appropriate laser for hair removal if you have a darker skin type. Complications can be permanent should the wrong laser be used. Even though these procedures are abundantly offered in a variety of settings such as strip malls, walk-in-clinics, and spas, it is important to choose an experienced provider of laser hair removal services such as a board certified dermatologist.
In general, the number of hairs that respond to a treatment session range from about 10 to 25 percent. Areas such as the armpits and the bikini area respond better than areas with thicker skin such as the back or the chin. Following treatment, the hair that regrows tends to be finer and lighter. For men and women with busy lifestyles, laser hair removal affords them the option of permanently reducing hair and therefore decreasing personal hygiene maintenance.
